Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainability Indicators, Coffee Agroecosystems

The dissertation research I am working in addresses the issue of coffee farming transformation trends in Central Veracruz, Mexico and how these transformations affect the sustainability of coffee agroecosystems. By defining agroecological and economic sustainability indicators at regional scale I attempt to measure and monitor changes in top soil, biodiversity, nutrient balance, pest incidence attack and grower economics at different coffee farming systems currently on going in the studio area. One the outcomes of the work will be a “risk map” that can approach a spatial distribution of “hot spots” where both economic and ecological sustainability is being maintained, increased or degraded.
