Huatusco, Veracruz and Villahermosa, Tabasco, July 11-26, 2004
The fifth International Shortcourse “Agroecology in Tropical Zones: Integrating Agroecosystems in the Regional Landscape” was held in Mexico from July 11 to 26, 2004, under Dr. Stephen Gliessman’s direction. Thirty-two participants from eight countries and seventeen instructors from five countries attended the course. The participants were from diverse agricultural sectors and included rural extensionists, researchers, students, recent graduates and university professors. The course was developed with an emphasis on agroecosystems integration in the regional landscape. The states of Tabasco and Veracruz in Mexico served as a field laboratory. This course included collaboration from the followed organizations: the Postgraduates School and the Tabasco State government in Tabasco, Chontalpa area; CENIDERCAFE of the Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo and the non-profit “Bosque de Niebla Las Cañadas” in Veracruz, Huatusco region. During two weeks thirty-seven conferences and four field practices were taught under the subjects of Introduction to Agroecology, Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, Structure and Function of Agroecosystems, Landscape Agroecology, Food Systems Ecology, and Transitions toward Sustainability.
